Every now and then a young one comes along that makes you look twice. Loveshack is a 2022 dunalino gelding who has already proven himself on a yearling cattle operation. He’s spent sunup to sundown sorting, pulling, and shipping cattle, and he handles it like an old hand. He’ll square up when cattle push back, then walk away quiet when the work is done. Mud, mess, or mayhem, he’s steady and surefooted through it all.
Not many 3-year-olds can say they’ve already carried a full-time job, but Loveshack can. He is truly the kind of horse that meets you at the gate in the morning, ready for whatever the day holds, steady and sure like he’s been at it for years. He is no stranger to early mornings and even loads and unloads himself on the trailer. Talk about liking his job.
One of his strongest traits is his eye for cattle. He slips through a herd like he already knows which one you’re after, staying cool-headed when pressure builds. Nothing much rattles him — not 1,200 pounds leaning into him, not a four-wheeler rattling past, not the clang and rattle of equipment. He’s the kind you can trust to stand up alongside you. My favorite thing about Loveshack? When I’m pulling a sick one, he stays so calm through the process, never getting his head above the saddle horn, which helps keep the cattle calm too.
He’s just as solid in the arena. Loveshack has already started tracking calves with the kind of feel most take months to find. From day one he acted like a veteran and showed he’ll make a rope horse overnight. No fuss, no fight, just all business. He’s honest and simple, the kind anyone can get along with and keep moving forward. He lopes collected circles with his head down, catches both leads, stays soft in the bridle, and melts into his stops.
Loveshack has also seen some country. He’s been ridden through creeks and timber back east, and we’ve trail ridden him all through Palo Duro Canyon, across bridges, down steep rocky embankments, up rugged cliffs, and through the quiet flats. He takes it all in stride. Bicycles zoom by, hikers come and go, and he doesn’t so much as flick an ear. He’s steadier on the trail than most people carrying the map.
And then there’s his personality. Loveshack isn’t just broke and dependable — he’s a hoot. He’s got that curious streak that keeps him fun without ever crossing the line into disrespectful. On a trail break the other afternoon he reached over and pulled the park map out of my husband’s back pocket, then waved it around like he was ready to take over navigation. That’s Loveshack: rock solid when you ask, but with just enough character to keep you smiling. Not every horse brings that kind of joy to the table.
